Curriculum Vitae
Eva Lingnau is a PhD student at the Department of Criminal law and Criminology of VU University Amsterdam since September 2009. Eva’s research topic is entitled “Breaking the Chain of Command, -military recruits, who refuse to obey illegal orders” and is closely related to the study of perpetrators of international crimes conducted by Alette Smeulers, who is one of Eva’s supervisors. During her Master’s program in Law and Politics of International Security, Eva worked as student assistant for Alette Smeulers on perpetrators of gross human rights violations in the conflicts in former Yugoslavia and in South Africa. Eva conducted research on private security companies in South Africa for her Master’s thesis.
Before starting her PhD research, Eva was a trainee at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva and interned at the Heinrich Böll Foundation North America in Washington, DC. Eva holds a Bachelor degree from the University College Maastricht where she focused on psychology, international law and international relations. During her bachelor program, Eva studied abroad at the University of California (Irvine) taking classes in US Foreign Policy Making.

Research activities
Eva Lingnau conducts research in the programme Empirical and Normative Studies.
“Breaking the Chain of Command” - The main aim of this research project is to track down and interview military recruits who refused to obey illegal orders and to compare them with the people who do commit international crimes.
